Meaning & Etymology
The name Edgar is derived from the Old English elements 'ead' meaning 'wealth, fortune' and 'gar' meaning 'spear'. It was the name of a 10th-century English king, Edgar the Peaceful. The name fell out of use after the Norman Conquest but was revived in the 18th century, partly due to its use in Walter Scott's novel 'The Bride of Lammermoor' (1819). The name has been popular in the United States and Latin American countries since the 19th and 20th centuries, respectively.
